Zalo: the messenger everyone in Vietnam actually uses

Zalo, not WhatsApp, dominates Vietnam. Here's how it works, why every business has a Zalo number, and how to open a Zalo chat from outside Vietnam.

In Vietnam, WhatsApp is a rounding error. Facebook Messenger is big, but Zalo — built in Ho Chi Minh City by VNG in 2012 — is the daily driver for the overwhelming majority of Vietnamese smartphone users. Every restaurant, real estate agent, hotel clerk, and Grab driver will hand you a Zalo number before anything else.

Why Zalo won

Zalo launched two years after Viber and one year after LINE, but two things gave it a durable edge in Vietnam:

  • Vietnamese-first design. Full support for Vietnamese diacritics, sticker packs featuring Vietnamese humor, and holiday themes for Tết.
  • Low bandwidth optimization. On 3G, Zalo felt snappy when Facebook Messenger dragged. In a country where mobile data was expensive relative to income in the early 2010s, this mattered.

Phone number and Zalo ID

Zalo accounts register with a phone number. Zalo also has a concept of Zalo ID (usually just a numeric string), but in practice everyone shares phone numbers.

Opening a Zalo chat

Zalo's URL scheme is zalo://… on mobile. Ringlink uses:

  • https://zalo.me/<phone> — a universal link that opens the Zalo app on iOS/Android if installed, or the Zalo web profile page if not.

The phone number must be in international format without the plus sign, e.g. https://zalo.me/84901234567. Vietnamese domestic numbers usually start with 03, 05, 07, 08, or 09 — the leading zero is dropped when converting to international.

What Zalo does that WhatsApp doesn't

  • Zalo Pay — one of the two dominant mobile wallets in Vietnam (the other is MoMo). Integrated into chats for splitting bills and paying merchants.
  • Zalo Official Accounts — businesses and government agencies broadcast to followers here. Immigration announcements, tax notices, and delivery updates often arrive via Zalo OA.
  • Zalo News — an in-app news reader with Vietnamese publishers. Many users get their news here rather than through browsers.
  • Mini Programs — like WeChat, Zalo hosts lightweight apps (parking payment, e-government services) inside the messenger.

Signing up outside Vietnam

  1. Install Zalo. Enter your local phone number (any country works).
  2. Zalo sends an SMS verification code. If you use a non-Vietnamese number, delivery can be flaky — try again or request a call.
  3. Grant contact access to see which of your contacts are on Zalo.

Doing business with Vietnamese suppliers

Communication expectations in Vietnamese business are:

  • Fast responses on Zalo (minutes, not hours).
  • Voice messages are common, sometimes more common than typed text.
  • Photos of documents are shared directly in chat rather than as email attachments.
  • End-of-day and Tết holiday greetings are expected in ongoing relationships.

Zalo and government scrutiny

Zalo operates under Vietnamese data laws, which require some classes of user data to remain on servers located in Vietnam. Zalo does not publish an end-to-end encryption specification, and chats should not be assumed to be private from law enforcement with a valid Vietnamese warrant. For sensitive conversations, Signal or an E2E channel remains the correct choice.

How Ringlink surfaces Zalo

Any +84 number in Ringlink lights up the Zalo tile at the top of the highlighted grid. WhatsApp still appears — some Vietnamese users have it for international contacts — but Zalo is where the actual conversation will happen.
