WhatsApp Business is a free, separate app from Meta aimed at one-person shops, restaurants, tutors, plumbers, and small teams. It uses the same underlying WhatsApp network — messages between a Business number and a regular number look identical to the recipient — but it adds tools the standard app doesn't: catalogs, automated greetings, quick replies, opening hours, labels, and a verified business profile.
Business or regular WhatsApp: pick one per number
A phone number can only be signed in to one of the two apps at a time. If you register with WhatsApp Business, the same number stops working in the regular app until you switch it back. Most solo operators install Business and never look back; the regular app keeps the personal number.
What Business actually adds
- Business profile — address, hours, category, website, email, product catalog. Customers see this when they tap the profile.
- Greeting message — an auto-reply that fires the first time a new customer messages you or after a period of silence.
- Away message — fires outside opening hours so customers know when you'll respond.
- Quick replies — canned answers to "what are your prices?" or "where are you located?" keyed to shortcuts like
/price. - Labels — colored tags on chats (New customer, Paid, Pending payment, Order complete) that only you see.
- Click-to-chat link —
wa.mestill works exactly the same way.
When to switch to Business
- You're the sole point of contact for a business.
- Customers are texting you about orders and you can't remember what stage each one is at.
- You want a public catalog you can share without a website.
- You keep answering the same three questions and want automation.
For anything bigger — a call center, multi-agent inbox, CRM integration — you outgrow the free Business app and want the WhatsApp Business Platform (API), which requires a Business Solution Provider and a paid conversation-based pricing model. That's a different product.
How to install without losing your chat history
- Back up your existing WhatsApp chats first (Settings → Chats → Chat backup).
- Install WhatsApp Business from Play Store or App Store.
- Verify with the same number. Business detects the backup and offers to import it.
- Set business name, category, hours, and description.
- Uninstall the regular WhatsApp app once you've confirmed everything moved over.
How Ringlink routes to WhatsApp vs WhatsApp Business
Ringlink shows two buttons whenever a number is valid: WhatsApp (green) and WhatsApp Business (with a briefcase icon).
- The WhatsApp button uses the standard
https://wa.me/URL. If both apps are installed, iOS and Android will offer a picker or use the app you last set as default. - The WhatsApp Business button uses the
whatsapp-business://sendURL scheme, which forces the Business app to open when it's installed. If Business isn't installed on the device, this button won't work — that's an OS behavior, not a Ringlink limit.
What customers see
The recipient of a message from a Business account sees a small "Business account" label at the top of the chat and can tap the header to view your profile. There's no green checkmark unless Meta has verified the business — verification is granted case by case to well-known brands and is not something small businesses can apply for directly.
Privacy notes for both sides
- Messages between a Business account and a regular WhatsApp user remain end-to-end encrypted by default.
- If the Business uses the WhatsApp Business Platform (API), some content may pass through a third-party provider — that's disclosed in the chat header.
- Automated messages (greetings, away, quick replies) are labeled in transcripts on the Business side but appear as normal messages to the customer.
