The single most useful thing you can do with WhatsApp is also the thing WhatsApp hides in its own UI: message someone without adding them to your address book. Couriers, hotel receptions, one-time contractors, the seller of a used couch, a driver you'll never speak to again — none of them belong in your contacts. This guide walks through every reliable way to open a WhatsApp chat from a raw phone number in 2026, on both Android and iPhone.
Why WhatsApp forces you to save contacts
WhatsApp indexes chats by the address book. When you tap the "New chat" button, the app scans your device contacts and shows you only people who already have WhatsApp installed. If someone isn't in your contacts, they simply don't appear. This is a product decision, not a technical limit — WhatsApp knows the number is valid the moment you type it, but the interface refuses to let you type it.
The workaround has existed since 2016. WhatsApp supports a public URL scheme, https://wa.me/, that opens a chat with any WhatsApp number without touching your contacts. Every "click to chat" widget you've ever seen on a small business website is a wa.me link.
The wa.me link format
The link looks like this:

Three rules make or break the link:
- Country code, no plus sign. Hong Kong is 852, the UK is 44, the US and Canada are 1. Write
85298765432, not+852 9876 5432. - No leading zero. UK mobiles look like
07700 900123locally, but the international form drops the leading zero:447700900123. - No spaces, dashes, brackets, or dots. Digits only. WhatsApp's server silently rejects anything else and shows an "Invalid phone number" screen.
Doing it manually on iPhone and Android
- Open the phone's browser (Safari, Chrome, Firefox — any works).
- Type
wa.me/followed by the number in international format. - Hit Go. Safari/Chrome will offer to open WhatsApp; confirm.
- WhatsApp shows a "Chat with +…" screen. Tap the green message button and you're in a real conversation. The number never touched your contacts.
If WhatsApp responds with "The phone number shared via link is not on WhatsApp," the number either doesn't have WhatsApp installed, isn't in E.164 format, or belongs to a WhatsApp Business account that's blocked new inbounds. See our WhatsApp Business guide for the last case.
Doing it in one tap with Ringlink
The manual method works but it's clunky — you're typing URLs in a browser, remembering not to include the plus sign, guessing country codes. Ringlink exists because we got tired of doing this by hand.
