KakaoTalk in South Korea: IDs, phone numbers, and business channels

KakaoTalk owns Korean messaging. Here's how Kakao IDs work versus phone numbers, and how to reach someone if you only have one or the other.

KakaoTalk — usually just "Kakao" or 카톡 (kaktok) in Korean — is installed on virtually every South Korean smartphone. Not "a lot" — every. Estimates put penetration at 97%+ of the national smartphone base. If you're doing business in Seoul, you'll get a Kakao ID before you get a phone number.

Kakao ID vs phone number

Every Kakao account is tied to a phone number, but Kakao IDs are the public face:

  • Kakao ID — self-chosen, 4–15 characters, letters and numbers. Optional but nearly universal for professional use. Case-insensitive.
  • Phone number — used at signup, syncs contacts from your device address book. Not shown to strangers.
  • QR code — every account has one; scanning adds as a friend.

Adding a Kakao contact

  1. Open KakaoTalk, tap the person icon at the top-right.
  2. Tap "Add friend."
  3. Choose "ID" and type the Kakao ID, or "QR code" to scan.
  4. If you both have each other's phone numbers saved and Kakao's contact sync is enabled, you may already be auto-added.

Auto-add by phone: on and quiet

Kakao's default is to auto-add anyone in your contacts who has Kakao installed with the same number. This is why Korean users often show hundreds of contacts on Kakao without ever manually adding anyone. It's opt-in but nearly always enabled during setup.

You can disable syncing under Settings → Friends → Sync contacts, at which point new friends must be added manually by ID or QR.

Kakao's URL scheme

Kakao supports deep links via kakaotalk://. The friend-add screen for a specific ID is:

  • kakaotalk://plusfriend/friend/<id> — for business "Kakao Channel" accounts.
  • Personal Kakao IDs are not directly deep-linkable; you have to enter them in the app's Add Friend screen.

Because personal IDs don't have a universal link, Ringlink copies the Kakao ID to your clipboard and opens KakaoTalk. Paste into the Add Friend field and you're done.

KakaoTalk Channels (business accounts)

Formerly "Plus Friends," Kakao Channels are business accounts anyone can follow. Their IDs are prefixed conceptually with@. Businesses use them for customer support, broadcast marketing, order notifications, and appointment reminders. Following a channel is closer to subscribing than adding a friend.

KakaoPay and the super-app playbook

Like WeChat and Zalo, Kakao is a super-app. It hosts:

  • KakaoPay — payments, transfers, insurance, investments. Used at physical stores via QR.
  • KakaoTaxi — the dominant ride-hail app in Korea.
  • Kakao Bank — a fully licensed digital bank you sign into with your Kakao account.
  • Kakao Gifts — send friends a coffee, a cake, or a subscription with a tap. Enormously popular for birthdays.

Setup outside Korea

  1. Install KakaoTalk from Play Store or App Store.
  2. Enter a phone number (any country). SMS verification usually works globally.
  3. Create a Kakao account with email if you want cross-device sync.
  4. Set a Kakao ID. Do this early — it's a one-time change under free plans, and many memorable IDs are taken.

Business etiquette

  • Use Korean names carefully — family name first (Kim, Park, Lee) is standard.
  • KakaoTalk messages are less formal than email but more formal than SMS. Full sentences and honorific verb forms if the relationship is business.
  • Group chats with clients are common. Silence in a group chat is not neutral — it reads as displeasure.

How Ringlink treats KakaoTalk

For +82 numbers, Ringlink surfaces KakaoTalk at the top of the highlighted grid. Since deep-linking to personal IDs isn't possible, tapping the Kakao tile with a Kakao ID entered will copy the ID and open the app — one paste and you're at the add-friend screen.
