On iPhone, the Messages app hides three completely different technologies under one interface: iMessage (Apple's proprietary internet protocol), SMS/MMS (traditional cellular text), and, since iOS 18 in 2024, RCS (the carrier-driven modern successor to SMS). The color of the bubble tells you which one is active.
Blue bubbles: iMessage
Blue bubbles mean both sender and recipient are on Apple devices signed in with Apple IDs, and the message is traveling over the internet through Apple's iMessage servers. iMessage supports:
- End-to-end encryption between Apple devices.
- High-resolution photos, videos, and GIFs.
- Read receipts, typing indicators, effects, and reactions.
- Group chats with names, mutes, and mentions.
- Handoff between iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
Green bubbles: SMS/MMS or RCS
Green bubbles used to mean SMS (short text via cellular) or MMS (multimedia over cellular). As of iOS 18, green can also mean RCS. The Messages app doesn't distinguish between the two visually beyond the color — you have to check the top of the thread.
- SMS — 160 characters per segment, no encryption, no read receipts, no typing indicators. Carrier fees may apply for international messages.
- MMS — SMS plus images, compressed heavily. Slow, unreliable, per-message billing on many carriers.
- RCS — Rich Communication Services. Runs over data, supports high-res media, read receipts, typing, larger groups. On iOS 18+, RCS chats with Android users get most of the iMessage feel except end-to-end encryption (Apple's RCS implementation currently follows the carrier baseline, which is not E2E in most deployments as of early 2026).
When iMessage falls back to SMS
Even between two Apple users, iMessage can silently fall back to SMS. Common causes:
- Recipient's Apple ID isn't registered with the phone number in question (they use Apple ID email only).
- Recipient's iPhone is offline for an extended period.
- iMessage servers are temporarily unreachable.
- You have "Send as SMS" enabled and iMessage delivery took too long.
The tell is the bubble color for that specific message. A blue thread with one green message means that particular message went by SMS.
Cross-platform: what actually happens
When you message an Android user from iPhone:
- iOS 18+ with RCS enabled: green bubbles, modern features, no E2E.
- iOS 17 or older: green bubbles, SMS/MMS only. Photos compressed to postage stamps.
- Android side: same conversation, RCS or SMS depending on their capability.
How Ringlink handles iMessage, SMS, and FaceTime
Ringlink shows four "system" tiles that always sit at the end of the app grid:
- iMessage — opens Messages via
sms:with an iMessage-preferred hint on iOS. Only useful on Apple devices; grayed out or hidden on Android. - SMS — opens the OS Messages app with the number pre-filled. Works on every phone.
- Call — opens the dialer with the number pre-filled. Universal.
- FaceTime — opens FaceTime with the number. Apple devices only.
Should you care about the bubble color?
For personal chats, functionally you shouldn't. The delivery differences on modern networks are small. The social signaling — "the green bubble makes them look like they can't afford an iPhone" — is culturally specific to US teenagers and doesn't reflect any real quality gap.
For business use, prefer iMessage or RCS when available for high-res media, but never rely on iMessage-only features (effects, Digital Touch) with a mixed-OS group. Assume the lowest common denominator.
Privacy note
iMessage is E2E between Apple devices, but Apple stores an iCloud Backup of your messages by default, which is encrypted with a key Apple holds — meaning Apple can produce them under legal process. To lock this down, enable Advanced Data Protection in iCloud settings, which moves the key to your devices only.
